The implementation of a morning routine could also require some ingenuity (like waking up a little earlier to fit in some solo time before your kids wake up, or involving them in your routine somehow). Try several things and keep in mind that consistency is the key to finding what works for you.

1. Make Your Bed

Making your bed is a task, yes, but it may also be a little, deceptively effective way to boost your self-esteem. ‘

The causes are numerous: Who doesn’t love to fall asleep in a freshly made bed at the end of the day?

It also goes a long way toward decluttering your room (and thoughts) and may even do some unexpected psychological work in the background.

Admiral William H. McRaven, a retired Navy officer, reportedly remarked, “If you make your bed every morning, you will have finished the first work of the day.

You’ll feel a tiny bit of pride after completing it, which will motivate you to complete further tasks. By the end of the day, that one task will have multiplied into several more tasks.

I never used to be the kind of person who made her bed every morning, but after finding this idea while researching mental health issues, I made the decision to give it a shot.

It was initially just…nice. I discovered that it was simpler to keep the rest of my room tidy when my bed was made, which is always beneficial for my mental health.

Until I stopped, I was unaware of how much the practice had grounded me and provided a benchmark for other positive behaviors.

After experiencing a few weeks of feeling more disorganized and down than normal, I came to the realization that I hadn’t been making my bed. It turned out to be the deciding factor.

Exercise wasn’t something I wanted to include on this list because, in my opinion, you either like doing out in the morning or you don’t, and no listicle on SELF is going to persuade you to do so if you don’t want to.

However, everyone can benefit from a nice morning stretch. It isn’t even necessary for it to serve as an addition to your usual workout or to be a full-on yoga regimen.

It may simply be a means to increase blood flow and, to be honest, to experience the pleasant sensation of a good stretch.

Of course, stretching correctly to prevent injury is especially crucial in the morning when you may be stiff and haven’t had enough time to warm up. Start by stretching your entire body out like this.

5. Drink some water

It is commonly known that drinking water has many advantages. Even though you should drink water frequently throughout the day, starting with a glass in the morning can help the process along.

In addition to biologically (because, hey, you’re getting some water in your body after eight-ish hours of not drinking), it also has a positive psychological impact.

Does anyone else occasionally get to midday or later only to discover they haven’t consumed a drop of the substance?

Drinking your first glass of alcohol in the morning can be really beneficial. Some folks even take it a step further by placing a glass of water on their nightstand the night before.

Although I’m team #coldwater all the way, I make sure to put a fresh jug in the fridge before bed so it’s exactly how I want it in the morning. I have a friend who swears by this. whichever suits you!

6. Write Morning Pages

If you wish to live a more creative life or practice more self-reflection, writing in the morning can be a really helpful habit.

However, you could dismiss it as something that only authors do. Morning pages were created by The Artist’s Way author Julia Cameron, according to official sources.

She believes that starting the day with three pages of free-writing, “anything crosses your mind,” can make your life better overall, especially by allowing you to be more in touch with your emotions.

Working with the morning pages, she says, “we begin to distinguish between our true feelings, which are frequently kept private, and our official feelings, which are those that are recorded for public display.”

Even if morning pages aren’t your thing, you might still gain from adopting a journaling routine.

7. Wash your face

I can only say that I’ve fully embraced this. Many individuals who are brighter than I am have already articulated how skin care can be a self-care technique (Jia Tolentino called it a “psychological safety blanket” in The New Yorker).

Regular skin care is not only essential for good skin, but it also makes me feel like I’m getting pampered every time.

This can be a wonderful way to begin a day that will otherwise be hectic and stressful.

Don’t worry if you’re wondering how the heck to squeeze some 11-step process into your already crammed mornings; your skin-care routine doesn’t actually need to be complicated at all (it really only needs three things).

The concept of a “routine” kind of implies that you get sh*t done with no fuss. However, playing video games while sipping coffee has got to be one of the nicest things I’ve added to my daily routine.

Sincerely, I now begin each day with Pokémon Shield. It’s easier for me to get up since my alarm clock no longer signals the start of the daily grind but the start of a two-hour chunk that is serene and focused on me time when I make time for something enjoyable and silly in the morning rather than just as a prelude to work.

Other suggestions include watching TV online, doing crafts, dancing to upbeat music, playing with your pets, reading, attempting a new breakfast recipe, or engaging in any other enjoyable or creative activities that you typically save for later in the day.

9. Write Or Review Your Daily To-Do List

Some people’s idea of the perfect morning is a safe space where they are not allowed to do any work. Completely true.

However, for some (like me! ), now is the ideal moment to strategize before being sidetracked by the inescapable flood of emails or schedule of appointments.

You are once more putting off making decisions depending on your emotions when you take the time to write up or evaluate your strategy for the day.

Yes, this is fantastic for productivity, but larger-scale planning is also significant. My favorite justification for how crucial it is to schedule your activities and tasks in advance comes from Greg McKeown’s book Essentialism.
