The ABO blood type system is an important concept for  transfusions. These transfusions are essential for saving lives. Donors’  is tested to ensure compatibility with the patient’s  type. This way, the recipient won’t experience any complications, such as rejection. In the event that your  type is incompatible with the recipient’s type, the transfusion may not be successful.

The ABO blood type system includes subgroups of donors with different levels of A or B antigen on their red cells. These subgroups are identified through routine tests performed by Canadian Blood Services.
